The Illustrated London News, vol. 40, no. 1139, p. 369.

April 12, 1862

An American journal states that the 600,000 troops in the Federal Army require per month 14,625,0001b. of pork, or 24,375,000lb. of fresh beef; 136,994 barrels of flour: 48,750 bushels of beans, or 1,050,000lb. of rice; 1,950,000lb. of cocoa, 2,892,000lb. of coffee, 195,000 gallons of vinegar, 12,449 bushels of salt, 8,580,000lb. of potatoes, 1,170,000lb. of candles, and 3,120,000lb. of soap.
