[On the 26th of December the Government stables at Washington were destroyed by fire]

January 18, 1862

On the 26th of December the Government stables at Washington were destroyed by fire. Between 200 and 300 horses were either burnt to death or received such injuries that it was deemed humane to destroy them. More than 1000 sets of harness were also destroyed.
