The Illustrated London News, vol. 45, no. 1278, p. 287.

September 17, 1864

In the year 1830 there were only seventy souls in Chicago. In 1835 Chicago was incorporated into a city, and in 1840 the population had increased to 4853. It now numbers not far from 170,000.
